Recent Work

PacoPenaAdding sound reinforcement to a concert hall designed for acoustic performances is always a challenge.

Recently, a touring flamenco performance group, headlined by guitar virtuoso, Paco Peña, came to a concert hall in Evanston, and TC Furlong provided a complete sound reinforcement system.  Having worked in that space before, we were aware of the acoustics and the design of the room.

This was a case where less was definitely more.  Bringing too powerful of a PA system would result in a muddy sound in this extremely reverberant space.

With this in mind, we designed a system with a single Meyer CQ-1 and 650P subwoofer per side as our main PA.  The front two rows were covered with Meyer UPM-1P front fills.

IndigoGirls1When the folk rock duo, Indigo Girls, performed in Skokie recently, TC Furlong got the call for a sound system at 1 pm—for a 4 pm sound check.

Just 3 hours, to design, pull, load, deliver, load-in, set-up, and test a full main PA that included ground-stacked Meyer MICA, 600-HP subs, and Galileo  loudspeaker management, plus power and signal distro.

“We’ve gotten pretty good at last minute.  Not that we hope for a show emergency, but there’s a certain rush we all get when the order comes down: big Meyer rig for a national act.  Oh, and it needs to be designed, prepped, and packed on the truck in 45 minutes,” said Project Manager, Chris Wintz.

TC Furlong’s Emergency Audio Response Team (EAR Team) jumped into action and started prepping gear before there was even an agreement in place.

“We had all hands on deck to prep the show quickly and get the truck loaded and out the door.  The house crew was outstanding—we could not have hit the deadline without their efforts,” said Operations Manager, Steve Whittenhall, who was also the System Technician on the show. “You just can’t beat Meyer gear for plug and play and sounding incredible without any muss or fuss.  The band’s engineer was thrilled with the gear, and, most importantly, that we could pull this off with just 3 hours notice.”

We hope you never have an audio emergency, but if you do, know that TC Furlong is ready to support you 24/7/365 with the full resources of our company—individual items, full systems or technical support.  During business hours, call our office at 847-367-9588.  After hours, call our 24/7 emergency paging operator at 800-676-4292.

Shure Tent w/Delay LinesPerennial challenges for any system designer include dealing with low ceilings, long/narrow rooms, reverberant spaces, limited rigging capacity, high-profile events, and a mixture of spoken word and loud musical program material.

Occasionally all these challenges—plus wind and weather—come together into one important job.

TC Furlong was asked by professional audio manufacturer Shure Inc. to design and operate a complete sound system in the music tent at Shure’s Family Day event at their world headquarters in Niles.  The sound system needed to deliver uniform coverage over the entire 60′ wide x 220′ long audience seating area and generate both the intelligibility necessary for speech as well as ample power for classic hard-rockers Cheap Trick in a concert setting.  Additionally, we provided an announcement system for the adjacent 60’x260′ food tent.

One of our important annual events is providing a full production support package to Northwestern University’s annual graduation ceremonies, including sound, lights, video, power generation, and remote TV production for several inter-related graduation facilities.

An element added this year was large-format LED displays to provide image magnification in their 45,000-seat open-air football stadium.

The biggest challenge of providing this technology in this setting was satisfying a matrix of competing and dynamic requirements—safety, image size, resolution, cost, weight, aspect ratio, size and weight of the support structure, and engineering demands given predicable wind speeds.   [click to continue…]
